Spring Forward

To mark the first day of spring, my best friend, Justine and I have decided to embark upon a 6 week quest to a healthier life. Justine turns 25 on June 13 which is why we picked the 6 week mark to really challenge ourselves. Yes, we want to shed some pounds, tone some muscle and probably try and tan some skin while we are at it but, we also want to break unhealthy eating habits and form better ones.

As I have heard many times before, diets do NOT work. I completely agree, diets usually fail because the best way to get in shape and stay in shape is to change your lifestyle. Justine and I are really trying form some healthy habits. While neither of us are complete junkies (although I have been called a garborater more than once) we both know there are areas we can improve upon.

Personally, I know that the biggest ways I sabotage my healthy eating habits are:
1) late night snacking
2)eating foods that I know I am sensitive to
3)succumbing to laziness and relying on fast food

I have a huge late night snacking addiction and I can ruin an entire day of making good food choices in just 15 minutes. Not only do I tend to binge eat at night, I know that consuming that many calories before I head to bed is just a set up for failure. To conquer this, I have decided to go cold turkey and set the rule of:
No eating after 9pm!

About a year ago I visited a naturopath in hopes of conquering a pretty bad case of eczema. I had allergy testing done and came up as sensitive to: all cow and goat dairy products, gluten and peanuts. She told me to cut all of these things out of my diet for at least 3 months with the hopes of it alleviating my eczema and a million other symptoms I didn't realize were the cause of a food allergy. I successfully did so with peanuts but had a couldn't forfeit dairy or gluten. Luckily, forgoing peanuts was enough to clear up my eczema. However, its been made pretty clear to me that dairy wrecks havoc on my digestion. I don't need to go into detail here but for the next six weeks I've decided to
limit dairy to just milk in my morning coffee.

Justine and I both struggle with fast food. Neither of us are very domestic and to be frank, we both hate cooking. It can be easy to trick oneself into thinking you are making a healthy choice for fast food by going to Subway or Extreme Pita but there's no replacing home cooked food. Therefore, we have decided to be strict:
No Fast Food!!

Other than that, we are challenging ourselves to be more active by working out for 1 hour for at least 4 days a week. We are limiting our alcohol intake to 4 times in a 6 week period and we are trying to focus on eating more complex carbs and restricting our intake of simple carbs. Finally, we want to encorporate freshly squeezed juice into one meal per day.

This will be a challenge. But that's what life is about. Wish us luck!!

Losing my Expectations

My brain seems to be functioning on vacation mode still so I'm a day late with my posting this week but really, if I'm making my own schedule then I'm gonna let myself break it.

I do however, have a quotation that I have been wanting to share. At this point in time, I seem to be learning a lot about expectations. It's a lesson that comes up now and again for me and as I have expressed before I believe the universe will keep teaching a person a lesson until it is fully grasped. I read this the other day and loved it:

"Serenity comes when you trade expectations for acceptance." - Unknown

I understand that having expectations only leads to disappointment but I tend to struggle with it because I find a great contradiction between setting goals and going with the flow. I also admit that I have difficulty with this because I like to be in control and I dislike when things don't go as planned. Goal setting is an important part of life and I know it is necessary, even just to prevent laziness. However, I can never seem to find the balance where I set goals but stay open and adaptable to the universe stepping in and giving me a push in a better direction.

I like my shared quotation because it gives me something to focus on.
Acceptance.

This week I will not lose sight of my goals but I will accept when a goal is not realized and look for my better way.

sunshine, rum & lemonade

As promised, here is my Cuban Vacay 2012 re-cap!

My favourite part of vacations is all the inside jokes that are formed. From being told I look like a more attractive version of Sarah Michelle Gellar to witnessing another girl being told she looks like Chewbacca but different, I didn't stop laughing all week. You form such a tight knit group with the people you travel with and the people you meet and I've been laughing about all our fun times since I got home. Although there were no men who would let me put lipstick on them (and believe me, I asked) I had such a great week and I'm dying for my next vacation to begin! I, Buffy the Vampire Slayer dedicate this post to: Sags & Bags, the guidos, the hockey boys, raspy, Tanya from '16 and Pregnant', grillz, the lady who yelled "Well that was a rough landing" as we arrived in Varadero, and of course, Miss Alex Jay the cuban hooker and my cousin Sara.

Starting things off right in the VIP lounge

edge of glory

Ola!!

I'm baaaack and pretty much freckled from head to toe! My week was lovely and I will share a full update complete with pictures tomorrow!

My trip was complete with lots of sunning, nightlife, new friends and dancing but I want to express my gratitude for the couple moments of downtime I had on the trip. One of my favourite things about travelling south is getting to watch the sun set over the ocean. It makes me think clearly and I feel a sense of equilibrium that is often tough for me to find.

I have come back feeling refreshed and ready to work it! I know that I am moving forward, even if I sometimes feel like I am stumbling, I know I'm on the right path.

Today I am thankful for this sense of clarity and renewed energy to go full steam ahead.

Bye Bye Birdy!

This really is a happy Monday for me because in just over 24 hours, I'll be flying away to a much anticipated vacation! I had a lovely and relaxing Easter weekend and I hope everyone else did as well.

My quotation today comes from Don Miguel Ruiz and it reads,

"There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally"

If there is one lesson I'm learning right now it is this. It is incredibly tiring to take things personally and it serves no purpose. All of the things I want to acheive in life will come to me so much easier if I can plow through and let things roll off my back. This does not come easy to me and it is definitely a learned skill but one that I see as very important to work on.

I hope everyone has a great week, I know that I will!! I can't say that I'll be thinking about anything too heavily over the next week but this thought will definitley be in mind and I hope I've now put it in yours.

vacation essentials

At this time next week, I will be laying on the beach with the sun on my face and a bubba mug full of deliciousness! It's always a busy time, the week before a vacation so I have been behind on my posting but in the spirit of vacation I thought I would give you a run-down of some of my vacation essentials. From day-to-day necessitites, to fashion must haves, here's a list of what I cannot forget to pack!

* Hot Sauce! I guess this doesn't apply to every to trip I take but I am going to Cuba. While Cuba has beautiful beaches, fun nightlife, cheaper rates than many other carribbean it is not a destination known for it's cuisine. However, I did NOT find the food horrible! I found stuff to eat everyday, and I managed not to get sick the whole week. My biggest complaint about the food was that the majority of it was incredibly bland. This year I'm bringing hot sauce in hopes of making my food a little more enjoyable.

*A Bubba Mug. Thanks to a friend from work, last year I knew to bring myself a bubba mug. When you order drinks at the bar they serve you with small plastic cups, which are equivalent to about two gulps. Not only is a bubba a lifesaver at the beach because it keeps your water cold all day but when you're ready to get your drink on in the evening (or early afternoon) it saves you from multiple trips to the bar which often have long lineups. Cubans keep a slow pace and no one wants to lose their buzz waiting in a line!

*iPod Dock. Pump-up music while you're getting ready to go out at night? Check! Beats for party nights at you resort's nightime bar? Check! Trust me on this one

*Baby Wipes.  This is something I reccommend for any trip. Baby Wipes are great because they have alcohol in them. This means they'll clean your dirty beach feet in a way regular body wash can't. They also work great on clothing for food or makeup spills. Maybe people aren't as messy or accident prone as I am but I always bring them on trips and people are always glad I do!

*Air Freshener. Unless you have your own room, you'll be thankful for this tip.

*High-Waisted Shorts. I can't get enough of high waisted shorts! I think they are the perfect item to be dressed up or down. Put on a denim pair with a loose crop-top to head to the beach and then dress them up at night with a cute tucked in blouse in the evening. I have a denim and a black pair that will definitely be in my suitcase.

*A Cute flirty Dress. Once again, this item can be dressed up or down. Whether you want to throw it over you bikini and head to the beach or slap on some accesories to give it a nighttime feel, a little dress is a must! Personally I'm a fan of the classic LBD!
*Last - but definitely NOT least on my list is,

The Lucky Shirt!

Good things always happen when I wear this shirt, and I know I don't go on vacation without it!
Hope some of you are lucky enough to be heading somewhere fun this spring!!

Adios!

To Passion

On this sunny Monday, I am thinking about passion. What drives you and what makes your heart race. I'm not just talking about romance and relationship, I'm referring to your hobbies and interests. Today I am imagining a Monday morning where I wake up and feel excited to go to work. It can and will happen. My quotation to start your week comes from Rumi, and it reads:

"Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love"

How can we go wrong if we do?
